Savitri and Satyavan
सावित्री
Princess Savitri chose Satyavan, a prince living in the forest, as her husband. Sage Narada warned that Satyavan had only one year left to live. But Savitri did not change her decision and married Satyavan. One year later, the fated day arrived. Satyavan was chopping wood in the forest when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed. Yama, the God of Death himself, came to claim Satyavan's soul. He drew the soul from Satyavan's body and began walking away. Savitri followed Yama relentlessly. Yama told her to turn back, for no one may follow beyond death. But Savitri refused to give up. She engaged Yama in wise and thoughtful conversation. Pleased by her wisdom, Yama granted her three boons — anything except Satyavan's life. Cleverly, Savitri asked for sons as her third boon. Yama realized this was impossible without Satyavan being alive. He laughed and returned Satyavan's soul. Savitri's intelligence and love had conquered death itself.
