Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat Katha

गणेश · भाद्रपद

Katha

Once Lord Shiva and Parvati were on Mount Kailash. As Parvati was going to bathe, she created a boy from the turmeric paste on her body and breathed life into him. She asked him to guard the door. When Shiva arrived, the boy stopped him. Angered, Shiva severed the boy\'s head. Upon Parvati\'s grief, Shiva attached an elephant\'s head to revive the boy and named him Ganesha. Shiva blessed Ganesha that he would be worshipped first before any auspicious undertaking. All the gods blessed Ganesha. Brahma declared that whoever worships Ganesha on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi would have all obstacles removed from their path. Once, the Moon mocked Ganesha\'s appearance. Ganesha cursed that whoever looks at the moon on Chaturthi would face false accusations. This is why people avoid looking at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. On this day, devotees install Ganesha\'s idol, worship him for up to ten days, and then perform the immersion ceremony. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom.

Method

Install Ganesha's idol on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. Offer modak, laddoo, and durva grass. Recite Ganesh Atharvashirsha. After ten days of worship, perform the immersion. Avoid looking at the moon on this day.

Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It is a festival of wisdom, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings.
