Pradosh Vrat Katha
भगवान शिव · प्रत्येक त्रयोदशी
Katha
During the churning of the ocean, when gods and demons churned together, many treasures emerged. First came the terrible Halahala poison whose flames began consuming all three worlds. The terrified gods sought refuge with Lord Shiva. To protect everyone, Shiva held the poison in his throat, which turned blue, earning him the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). This event occurred on the Trayodashi (thirteenth day) during Pradosh Kaal (twilight hour). Pleased with Shiva\'s sacrifice, all the gods praised him. Brahma declared that whoever worships Shiva during Pradosh Kaal on Trayodashi would be freed from all sins and receive Shiva\'s special grace. A poor Brahmin observed the Pradosh vrat and worshipped Lord Shiva. Pleased, Shiva blessed him with wealth, fame, and liberation. Since then, the Pradosh fast is observed on both Trayodashis of each month. Pradosh falling on Monday (Som Pradosh) and Saturday (Shani Pradosh) are considered especially auspicious.
Method
Observe the fast on Trayodashi. During Pradosh Kaal (from sunset to about ninety minutes after), offer water, milk, and bel leaves on the Shivalinga. Worship the Shiva family. Chant Om Namah Shivaya. Listen to the katha and break the fast.
Significance
Pradosh Vrat commemorates Lord Shiva's sacrifice of consuming poison. It is the supreme fast for destruction of sins, removal of troubles, and receiving Shiva's grace.
